About the Album#
Where Interpol’s debut Turn On the Bright Lights built its reputation on atmosphere and slow-burning dread, Antics arrives tighter and more deliberate. The band stripped back the reverb and let the songs breathe differently — sharper rhythms, cleaner arrangements, and a directness that made the record their most immediately accessible work.
Peter Katis’s production gives Antics a precision that rewards repeated listening. The guitars interlock with unusual care, Paul Banks’s deadpan baritone sits forward in the mix, and tracks like “Evil” and “Slow Hands” move with a propulsive confidence that the debut, for all its atmosphere, rarely attempted. It is a record that earns its own place rather than trading on what came before.
